Brave Enough to Listen

In the midst of tests and agendas and projects and quizzes and standards and pacing guides and more tests, we find ourselves neglecting what's important in the classroom…relationships.

Lunchtime and recess have become my favorite times of the day. We laugh. We play. We eat. They talk. I listen. I was engaged in their stories today and found it to be beautiful.

Something as simple as giving them an ear about their weekend or listening to their fears and heart's desires make a huge difference when it's time for instruction. They trust you and when their hearts are open their minds follow.

As teachers, let's not only have the courage to teach and collect data, but let us wear hearts of bravery and collect their stories. Let's listen. Our future has something to say.
